Module 9
9E. Excellent Sheep by William Deresiewicz
In four readings/meetings? – pages 1-41, 41-73, 77-129 and 149-172
This book, when Peter used it in class, and when we listed it as part of our original guide team curriculum, has presented readers with a person who has strong opinions, especially as they relate to the topic of the subtitle of the book, what Deresiewicz calls “the miseducation of the American elite.”
Not everyone will agree with Deresiewicz’s point of view, but Peter often finds it helpful to give readers a piece of writing with a particular point of view so the reader has something to bounce his or her reaction against. You can agree or disagree with the book’s thesis, but it has been Peter’s experience that the more the reader thinks about the book, the more, especially younger people, find his argument getting traction, especially in their own personal lives. You’ll have to see for yourself, and remember that Deresiewicz is a humanities professor, so that adds to the argument he is trying to make.
